Marty Martinez and Lily Patrick helped me set up many hundreds of the memorial vases to honor the fallen soldiers this day.

We talked about the shape we wanted to create using the vessels, first thinking about making a cross, but decided we wanted a more inclusive symbol. Marty, a retired Army officer, suggested the shape of a shield.

It was interesting to watch the shape change (and challenging to photograph) with the changing light as the shadows lengthened.

Another formidable challenge were the dandelions, growing heartily throughout the day, pushing over the vases we had set up.
